Hyper-V LIVE! TechNet Radio, ITProGuru vs. And Virtualization Series Experts #VirtExperts brings you Hyper-V LIVE (Part 2 of 2)

TechNet Radio, ITProGuru vs and Become a Virtualization Expert with 20 + Days of Server Virtualization #VirtExpert (part 6b of 20+) have teamed up to bring you Hyper-V Live!  Dan Stolts and Microsoft MVP Rob McShinsky are back for part 2 of their Hyper-V Live series and in today’s episode they demo for us Live Storage Migration, Multiple Live Migrations and how to rapidly move multiple VMs at one time without interruption through Live Cluster Node Evacuations.

Guru Tip! Check out all of the Live Features in Hyper-V!

  • [0:50] DEMO: Live Storage Migration
    • What is it?: Ability to move VMs hard disk(s), and all other configuration files between LUNs on the same host without interruption. Can be clustered or non-clustered storage
    • Prerequisites :At least 2 Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V hosts and an additional Volume (No Migration between different Hyper-V versions)
    • Available in previous version of Hyper-V: No (Only Quick Storage Migration)
    • What to look out for: Be careful of performing multiple storage migrations at once as you could produce high I/O on the destination volume/SAN.
    • Powershell: Move-VMStorage “VMName” c:vmsVMName
  • [8:57] DEMO: Live Migration
    • What is it? Ability to move VMs between hosts without interruption.
    • Prerequisites : Must be running Hyper-V with Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1* or 2012
    • Available in previous version of Hyper-V: Yes
    • What to look out for: Speed of Live Migration is dependent on amount of VM resources and Host Network Bandwidth.
    • Powershell: Move-VM “VMName” NodeName
  • [18:50] DEMO: Multiple Live Migrations
    • What is it?: Ability to move VMs between hosts without interruption without the need for shared cluster storage.
    • Prerequisites :
      • At least 2 Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V hosts.
      • Available in previous version of Hyper-V: No (Needed to Shutdown the VM to move between standalone hosts)
    • What to look out for:
      • Speed of Live Migration is dependent on size of VM resources and Host Network Bandwidth.
      • Watch out for migrations over WAN links. BITS is used, but there are no configurations for max bandwidth to use.
    • Powershell: Move-VM “VMNAME” DESTINATIONSEVER -IncludeStorage -DestinationStoragePath D:VMSVMNAME
  • [21:16] DEMO: Cluster Node Live Evacuations / Pause
    • What is it?: Ability to move multiple VMs from a single host at one time between Hyper-V 2012 hosts without interruption. With or Without Shared storage.
    • Prerequisites :
      • At least 2 Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V hosts
      • Additional Volume for multiple storage migrations
    • Available in previous version of Hyper-V: No (Yes with single Live Migration from multiple hosts)
    • What to look out for:
    • Host Management NIC saturation.
    • Destination Volume/SAN could be susceptible to high I/O conditions.
    • Powershell:
      • Get-VM | Move-VM DESTINATIONSERVER
      • Get-VM | Move-VM DESTINATIONSERVER -IncludeStorage -DestinationStoragePath d:VMs

In Part 1 we covered:

  • Live Add Memory
  • Live Snapshot Merging
